The Senegal Space Week 2026 opened with a powerful message from General Birame Diop, representing President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Addressing an audience of experts and global partners, he emphasized that today’s security challenges extend beyond land and sea—space is now a critical frontier.
In his keynote, the Minister of Armed Forces underscored that mastering space technology is essential for bolstering Senegal’s defenses. From combating terrorism and maritime piracy to curbing transborder crime, satellite data and advanced geospatial tools provide real-time insights that strengthen national security.
The Senegalese Space Studies Agency took center stage as the Minister highlighted its cutting-edge projects. He pointed out how satellite imagery, high-resolution mapping, and geospatial intelligence empower defense and security agencies to make faster, data-driven decisions and mitigate risks before they escalate.
Strengthening international ties was also a highlight. Several strategic partnerships were formalized during the event to expand Senegal’s collaboration in space exploration, technology sharing, and joint research initiatives.
Beyond defense, General Diop called for urgent investment in youth education in space sciences, digital innovation, and high-tech fields. He stressed that building a skilled workforce and advanced infrastructure is vital for Senegal to emerge as a leading African player in the global space sector. The gathering also paid tribute to General Mansour Seck, a pioneer in Senegalese aviation, whose legacy continues to inspire future generations.
