Tensions at the highest level of Senegal’s government between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko continue to draw reactions across the country. In an appearance on TFM’s Infos Matin program, Kaolack Mayor Serigne Mboup voiced his disappointment over the deteriorating relationship between the two key political figures who once stood united in their ambitions.
As a staunch supporter of Ousmane Sonko during the recent legislative elections, Serigne Mboup lamented the shift in their once-solid alliance. ‘This situation pains me deeply,’ he admitted. ‘I had decided to step away from politics entirely because what I witnessed displeased me. I’ve campaigned for only one candidate in my life—Ousmane Sonko—and I stood by him throughout the elections.’

Serigne Mboup called on both leaders to prioritize reconciliation and maintain their partnership for the sake of Senegal’s development. He warned that a permanent split could stall critical initiatives aimed at improving the nation’s future. ‘A conflict of this magnitude only leads to stagnation. Right now, nothing in Senegal is moving forward,’ he observed.
The mayor emphasized that while he harbors no personal grievances, the political deadlock must end. ‘My wish is for Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko to walk together in peace. Only then can I return to what I do best—seeking partners and investing in education initiatives,’ he shared.
neutrality with a clear stance
Despite his historical ties to Sonko, Serigne Mboup made it clear he does not align with either faction. ‘I’m with neither Diomaye nor Sonko,’ he declared. ‘However, if President Diomaye reaches out to support Kaolack’s development projects, I’ll respond positively. But I will never join his political party.’
For Serigne Mboup, the consequences of political infighting are far-reaching. ‘When leaders are divided, public action grinds to a halt. Senegal cannot afford to lose momentum at this juncture,’ he concluded.
