Sénégal: Bassirou Diomaye Faye Launches KIIRAAY, New Political Party, And Opens Up New Phase In Sénégal’s Politics

The president of Sénégal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has officially launched his new political formation, « KIIRAAY – Les Patriotes Républicains », in Dakar on Saturday, July 25th. This marks a new step in the recomposition of Sénégal’s political landscape after his split with the PASTEF party, led by his now-ex-mentor Ousmane Sonko.

The new party was unveiled at an assembly general meeting held in a hotel on the place, and its motto is « La Patrie d’abord », emphasizing a focus on defending national interests, strengthening republican institutions, and consolidating the rule of law.

In wolof, « Kiiraay » means « what protects », a choice made by the initiators as a symbol of a party aimed at accompanying President Faye’s governance project and unifying forces favorable to his vision for transforming Sénégal.

After the assembly, delegates unanimously elected Bassirou Diomaye Faye to lead the new party. This decision marks a change in his political stance, following his departure from Pastef’s leadership roles at the beginning of his presidential term.

A resolution read by Aminata Touré, general supervisor of the former coalition Diomaye Président, states that KIIRAAY was formed by merging 437 parties, movements, and associations united around a common project aiming to support reforms initiated by President Faye and development ambitions of the country.

Beyond its political scope, the birth of this new formation is being closely watched by international partners, investors, and development actors. In a context where Sénégal is implementing its Vision Sénégal 2050 strategy, stability in institutions and governance clarity remain crucial factors in boosting investor confidence, attracting investments, and solidifying international partnerships.

The launch of KIIRAAY opens up a new phase in Sénégal’s politics, likely to redefine the balance within President Faye’s majority government as well as opposition, ahead of upcoming elections, while influencing the framework for future economic and institutional reforms in the country.
