Political funding transparency: Sonko pushes for stricter oversight in Senegal

Stricter controls on political funds debated in Senegal

During a heated session at the National Assembly, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko reiterated his administration’s commitment to tightening oversight of political funds in Senegal. The move aims to ensure greater transparency in how public resources are allocated and managed—a stance that differs from President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s position on the issue.

Sonko, addressing lawmakers during the questions d’actualité, emphasized that his party, Pastef, has long advocated for structured governance of these funds. His remarks were a direct response to concerns raised about financial accountability in political spending.

The Prime Minister clarified that the goal is not to eliminate political funds but to implement rigorous monitoring mechanisms. “Every franc from the Senegalese people must be accounted for,” he declared, underscoring the need for strict financial discipline.

In a surprising disclosure, Sonko revealed that the Prime Minister’s office currently manages political funds totaling approximately 1.77 billion West African CFA francs. He framed the debate as a matter of principle rather than personal criticism, stating that the focus remains on systemic reform.

However, Sonko acknowledged a key disagreement with President Faye, who has defended the continuation of these funds, citing critical expenses such as national security, intelligence operations, and diplomatic obligations. The Prime Minister countered by pointing to international models, including France, where dedicated commissions oversee the use of special funds.

He also disclosed that he had discussed the matter with the Head of State following parliamentary initiatives led by Deputy Guy Marius Sagna. Sonko warned that ignoring these concerns could undermine public trust in the government’s financial stewardship.
