On May 2, 2026, he was officially recognized as an honorary Hounon, a title reserved for those who have made exceptional contributions to the preservation and promotion of indigenous faiths.

His administration has implemented key initiatives, including the establishment of Vodun Days, the repatriation of looted royal treasures, and the formation of the Vodun Rites Committee. Additionally, major infrastructure projects like the Ouidah Arena and the upcoming International Vodun Museum in Porto-Novo reflect his commitment to cultural revival.

The Vodun community’s decision to honor Patrice Talon stems from his relentless efforts to safeguard national traditions. A grand ceremony was held on May 2 to formally bestow the Hounon d’honneur title—the highest distinction in Vodun culture—celebrating his impactful work.

Professor Mahougnon Kakpo, a prominent cultural figure, emphasized that this recognition highlights the importance of policies that strengthen national identity and heritage preservation.

Due to a packed schedule, Patrice Talon could not attend the event in person. Instead, Jean-Michel Abimbola, Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, accepted the honor on his behalf. In his address, the minister praised the recognition as a testament to the government’s cultural policies, which foster social cohesion, enhance Benin’s global image, and reconnect the diaspora with their roots.

Notably, the distinction coincides with Patrice Talon’s 68th birthday, celebrated just one day prior on May 1.
