Ousmane Sonko’s evolving discourse on the constitutional council

Constitutional Council: After initial calm, Ousmane Sonko completely alters his narrative

Conseil constitutionnel : Après l’apaisement, Ousmane Sonko change complètement de discours

Ousmane Sonko has recently displayed a notable shift in his public statements concerning the Constitutional Council. His rhetoric has transitioned from advocating for adherence to its rulings to delivering sharp criticisms. During the inauguration of Pastef’s headquarters in Touba, he openly condemned what he perceives as the President’s influence over legislation passed by deputies, describing the situation as “grave.”

Ousmane Sonko has made a clear decision to alter his stance regarding the Constitutional Council. His position appears to have evolved significantly within a mere few days. Following the Council’s decision to invalidate a bill passed by the National Assembly – a text intended to bolster parliamentary powers at the expense of the President of the Republic – the leader of Pastef had initially urged respect for this very ruling.

“This decision is binding on all! (…) In a democracy, when institutions fulfill their roles, each within its designated sphere of action, no crisis can arise,” Ousmane Sonko had previously asserted. However, at the official opening of Pastef’s new offices in Touba, the prominent political figure delivered a markedly different address. Speaking before his supporters, he vehemently criticized the judgment handed down by the seven members of the Constitutional Council.

“The Constitutional Council cannot dictate that deputies must pass laws solely to please the President of the Republic. What is unfolding in this nation is serious,” he declared. Ousmane Sonko also questioned the Head of State’s frequent appeals to the Constitutional Council. “Every week, he goes to the Constitutional Council,” he stated, referring to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
