Niger and China celebrate 50 years of medical partnership at Niamey hospital

In a landmark event marking half a century of collaboration, Niger and the People’s Republic of China commemorated decades of unwavering medical solidarity at the Niamey General Reference Hospital. The ceremony, held on March 25, 2026, was led by Niger’s Minister of Public Health and Hygiene, Colonel-Major Garba Hakimi, and honored the enduring contributions of Chinese medical teams in the country.

a legacy of service and expertise

Over the past five decades, successive teams of Chinese medical professionals have served in Niger, offering their skills, dedication, and advanced medical knowledge to communities across the nation. Their continuous presence has played a pivotal role in strengthening local health systems and expanding access to essential care for millions of Nigeriens.

The Minister of Public Health extended his deep appreciation to the Chinese medical personnel, commending their commitment, discipline, and high standards of professionalism. He emphasized that their collaboration with Nigerien health workers has significantly boosted the capacity of national health facilities, particularly in patient care, staff training, and the introduction of modern medical technologies.

a landmark donation to boost health care

During the event, Niger received a major donation from the Chinese government valued at approximately 99,244,000 FCFA. The contribution included essential medicines and medical supplies, which were formally handed over to the Niamey General Reference Hospital. This gift underscores the depth of the bilateral partnership and the shared commitment to improving public health outcomes in Niger.

statistics that tell a story of impact

According to Ambassador Lyu Guinjun of the People’s Republic of China to Niger, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has dispatched nearly 800 highly skilled doctors and nurses from top Chinese hospitals to work in Niger over the past 50 years. Together with their Nigerien colleagues, these medical professionals have provided care to nearly 1.8 million patients, earning them the affectionate title of “white-robed ambassadors” of Sino-Nigerien friendship.

Mr. Du Zhenzong, head of the Guangxi Health Commission delegation, highlighted that Chinese medical teams have not only cured illnesses but also fostered enduring bonds of friendship and trust. Since 1974, they have delivered medical services to over 2.3 million people, trained more than 45,000 health workers, and helped lay the foundation for a sustainable health system in Niger—leaving behind a legacy that continues to strengthen both nations.

honoring a partnership rooted in shared values

Dr. Daou Mamane, Director-General of the Niamey General Reference Hospital, praised the long-standing partnership with Chinese medical teams, calling it a cornerstone of the country’s health development. He described the recent donation of medicines as a vital lifeline for patients and a testament to the strength of the Niger-China alliance in health care. He assured donors that all supplies would be distributed in full compliance with national and international standards to benefit the most vulnerable populations.

In closing the ceremony, Colonel-Major Garba Hakimi symbolically presented gifts to the Chinese medical team and signed a new partnership agreement between Niger and China. This milestone event reaffirmed the two nations’ shared vision: to build a healthier future through sustained cooperation, mutual respect, and collective progress.
