In a bold diplomatic gesture, Morocco has renamed a major highway in the Sahara Western region after former US President Donald Trump. The decision, announced by King Mohammed VI, marks a significant milestone in bilateral relations between Rabat and Washington.
The newly designated Autoroute Donald J. Trump spans 1,055 kilometers, making it the longest road infrastructure in Africa. This monumental project connects southern Morocco to the contested Sahara Western territory, which remains a subject of debate on the international stage.
Diplomatic recognition
In a letter dated July 2, King Mohammed VI personally informed Donald Trump of the renaming decision, acknowledging the former US president’s historic 2020 recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara Western region. This pivotal move facilitated the normalization of relations between Morocco and Israel, further solidifying strategic partnerships in the region.
The monarch expressed his gratitude in the correspondence, stating that “the recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara will forever remain etched in the collective memory of the Moroccan people.” He added, “In tribute to this gesture of friendship and peace, I have decided to name one of the kingdom’s most vital infrastructure projects after President Donald J. Trump.”
Geopolitical context and regional impact
The Sahara Western region, a former Spanish colony until 1975, has been a focal point of contention between Morocco and the Polisario Front, an independence movement backed by Algeria. Despite Morocco’s control over most of the territory, the United Nations continues to classify it as a non-autonomous region.
Donald Trump’s administration played a crucial role in reshaping the diplomatic landscape when it recognized Morocco’s sovereignty in exchange for the normalization of relations with Israel. This unprecedented stance has been reiterated by the current US leadership, with Donald Trump emphasizing in a recent message to King Mohammed VI that “the Moroccan plan remains the sole basis for a just and lasting solution.”
The Autoroute Donald J. Trump not only symbolizes Morocco’s gratitude but also highlights the enduring significance of the Morocco-US alliance in fostering regional stability and economic development.
