Morocco-Philippines trade growth jumps 50% in recent years

The bilateral trade relationship between Morocco and the Philippines has experienced a remarkable surge, with exchanges increasing by approximately 50% in recent years, according to Ambassador Leslie Baja of the Philippines in Rabat. While this growth is encouraging, both nations believe there remains significant untapped potential in their economic partnership.

The ambassador highlighted the strong foundation of 50 years of diplomatic relations, marked by high-level exchanges, numerous agreements, and deep human connections that he described as “the cornerstone for the next 50 years of cooperation.”

Strategic sectors ripe for deeper collaboration

Ambassador Baja emphasized that Morocco’s position as a gateway to Africa and Europe, combined with the Philippines’ active role in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), creates complementary strengths that could drive enhanced economic cooperation. He specifically pointed to promising opportunities in sectors such as:

  • Agro-industry – Leveraging Morocco’s agricultural expertise with Filipino market demand
  • Aerospace – Exploring joint ventures in aircraft manufacturing and maintenance
  • Electronics – Strengthening supply chain partnerships in tech components
  • Textiles – Expanding trade flows in garment and fabric industries

The ambassador noted that the Philippines ranks among the top importers of Moroccan phosphate, a key agricultural resource, further underscoring the natural synergies between the two economies.

Regional integration opportunities

Looking beyond bilateral ties, Ambassador Baja praised the 2023 Morocco-ASEAN sectoral partnership agreement, which he believes opens new avenues for collaboration at both regional and international levels. He drew parallels between this initiative and the ASEAN model, suggesting that enhanced African regional integration could yield substantial economic, political, and social benefits.

“Regional integration in Africa will undoubtedly strengthen the continent’s economic and political stability, making it more resilient and culturally vibrant,” he stated.

Support for Morocco’s autonomy plan

The ambassador reiterated the Philippines’ support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for the Southern Provinces, calling it a “solid foundation” for resolving the territorial dispute. This stance was formally expressed during the 2022 visit of the Philippine Foreign Minister to Morocco.

He also referenced UN Security Council Resolution 2797 as a potential game-changer in this process, expressing optimism that the political solution would gain momentum under UN-led negotiations.

Celebrating 50 years of shared history

In a related cultural initiative, Ambassador Baja announced the upcoming launch of a book documenting the 50-year history of Morocco-Philippines relations. The publication aims to highlight not only key historical milestones but also the human connections that have fostered mutual understanding between the two peoples.

“This book goes beyond historical facts—it serves as a testament to the enduring bonds between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of the Philippines,” he explained.

The ambassador’s remarks underscore the depth of the relationship between the two nations and the potential for even greater cooperation in the years ahead.
