Mali has initiated a profound reorganization of its military leadership following the coordinated attacks on April 25, 2026. These assaults, claimed by both the JNIM and the Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA), tragically resulted in the death of former Defense Minister, General Sadio Camara, among other casualties.
As detailed in a special edition of the Official Journal published on May 29, several senior officers have been appointed to crucial positions within the Malian Armed Forces and the unified force of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
Brigadier General Makan Alassane Diarra now assumes leadership of the AES Unified Force. Formerly the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, he takes over from General Daouda Traoré. His extensive experience in military operations across the eastern part of the country played a significant role in this strategic designation.
To fill the vacancy at the General Staff of the Armies, authorities have selected Brigadier General Mamadou Massaoulé Samaké, who previously served as a strategy advisor. Concurrently, Colonel-major Yacouba Sanogo has been assigned the role of strategic advisor to the General Staff.
This comprehensive restructuring also extends to operational commands on the ground. Colonel-major Karim Traoré has been named commander of the East Theater, Colonel-major Didier Dembélé now leads the South Theater, while Colonel Issa Bagayoko is entrusted with the Center Theater.
These appointments are part of a series of decisive actions taken after the April attacks. The President of the Transition, General Assimi Goïta, has personally taken charge of the Defense portfolio, with General Oumar Diarra appointed as Minister Delegate responsible for this critical sector.
Through this significant military command restructure, Bamako aims to enhance its response capabilities against an escalating security threat and improve coordination between national operations and those conducted under the AES framework, reinforcing African governance and security in the region.
