Mali army claims upper hand in clashes with armed groups

Military authorities in Mali have declared that government forces have regained the initiative and secured key zones previously targeted by armed factions operating in the northern and central regions. The announcement follows intensified clashes with the Front de Libération de l’Azawad (FLA) in the north and the Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM)—an Al-Qaeda-affiliated group—in the center and south of the country.

According to a formal statement released by the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa), fighting resumed on Sunday near Anifif, a strategic location located approximately 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The clashes intensified after reinforcements, including additional personnel and military equipment, were reportedly dispatched to support the FLA fighters in the area.

In their official communiqué, the FAMa highlighted the resilience and tactical discipline of national troops, stating: “Confronted by renewed aggression, our armed forces have responded with steadfast resolve, sustaining combat operations throughout the day with professionalism and courage.”

The military leadership reaffirmed its unwavering confidence in the ability of the Malian Armed Forces to preserve national sovereignty, safeguard civilian lives, and decisively defeat hostile forces operating within the country’s borders.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Front de Libération de l’Azawad, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had previously asserted control over positions in Anifif following the outbreak of renewed hostilities. He also dismissed reports regarding the alleged death of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, insisting that the commander remains actively engaged in directing field operations across northern Mali.
