Maganga Moussavou backs Oligui Nguema’s reform agenda with cautious optimism

Following President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema’s State of the Nation address, Pierre-Claver Maganga Moussavou, leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), shared his perspective in a candid interview. As a former Vice President of Gabon, he praised the speech’s emphasis on action, responsibility, and mindset shifts, highlighting the President’s renewed commitment to empowering citizens and reclaiming the nation’s economic sovereignty.

The PSD chairman underscored the importance of the initiatives outlined, particularly those targeting youth empowerment. He commended the Gabonese Trade and Entrepreneurship Bank (BCEG) for providing critical tools to foster private sector growth and economic self-reliance. « The President’s vision aligns with my own convictions, » Maganga Moussavou stated, while urging swift implementation of promised reforms to benefit the population.

Balancing support with constructive critique

While acknowledging the monumental challenges ahead for the new administration, Maganga Moussavou pointed to the reforms initiated since August 30, 2023, as a foundational step toward progress. He stressed that collective mobilization—across political divides—will be essential to overcoming Gabon’s economic, social, and institutional hurdles.

Describing himself as a « pragmatic opposition leader, » he reaffirmed his willingness to collaborate on national development initiatives. « In steering the country forward, he can count on my full support, » he declared, emphasizing his readiness to leverage his experience for Gabon’s advancement. Beyond political differences, he called for responsible cooperation to meet citizens’ aspirations.
