UEFA Regulations Threaten Côme’s Champions League Squad Options

Côme’s inaugural Champions League campaign could face an unexpected hurdle: a severely restricted squad list. The Local Formation Gap Plaguing Côme

Fàbregas recently highlighted the club’s infrastructure shortfall in a late July press conference. “The UEFA roster limits force us into a tight corner,” he explained. “Without a fully operational academy meeting UEFA standards, we’ll enter the Champions League with just 16 or 17 players available.” The irony? Côme fields the Serie A’s youngest squad (average age 26), yet lacks homegrown talent meeting competition rules. Since taking charge in November 2023, Fàbregas has been compelled to pivot toward Italian-developed players to avoid roster restrictions.

Summer Signings Offer Limited Relief

This transfer window saw Côme complete five deals, yet only one acquisition—striker Mattia Liberali from Catanzaro for €6 million—was an Italian talent. While the coaching staff plans to adjust recruitment priorities before the transfer window closes, the club’s future in Europe may hinge on an unexpected solution: the rapid progression of their youth ranks.
