Libya launches major border security sweep near Chad border

The Libyan military has initiated a sweeping operation across southern regions to tighten border security and curb irregular migration flows toward Chad. Colonel Ahmed Abu Qila, commander of desert patrols in the southern sector, confirmed the deployment of forces from Sebha and Umm al-Aranib, extending through Qatrun, Dahaan, Murzuq, and Tajarhi.

In a televised address to Al-Masar television, Colonel Abu Qila outlined the operation’s objectives: mapping key routes, refining long-term security strategies, and establishing a new security post in what authorities designate as “border zone 17.” He emphasized the critical role of the General Command in supporting the anti-immigration agency, underscoring the urgency of addressing irregular migration as a matter of national security.

The colonel highlighted substantial improvements in field operations, attributing them to enhanced logistical and technical support provided by the agency’s deputy commander. He also pointed to upcoming collaborations with allied nations and the acquisition of advanced surveillance equipment as pivotal steps to dismantle smuggling networks and disrupt cross-border criminal activities.
