Gabon’s bold move to boost intra-african trade and economic sovereignty

President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema is driving an initiative to significantly accelerate Gabon’s economic integration within the African market. During a Council of Ministers meeting on June 25, he issued clear directives to his government, emphasizing the prioritization of imports from fellow African nations, particularly within the crucial food sector. This strategic shift aims to translate his profound pan-Africanist vision into tangible public policy.

Intra-African trade is now officially a cornerstone of Gabon’s economic strategy. Convening the Council of Ministers on June 25, President Oligui Nguema instructed his administration to promptly implement concrete measures designed to fortify commercial exchanges with other African countries, with a special focus on agricultural and food products.

This new economic direction signifies a pivotal phase in the Head of State’s agenda, positioning regional integration and South-South cooperation as central tenets of his leadership since assuming office.

An executive mandate for ministries

According to the official communiqué from the Council of Ministers, President Oligui Nguema underscored the imperative of favoring imports from African states to bolster the continent’s collective economies. He stated, «By promoting imports from African countries, especially for food items, we actively contribute to the economic integration of the continent and foster shared prosperity among our sister states.»

Beyond this declaration of principle, the President demanded swift execution of this directive. The Council of Ministers communiqué explicitly characterizes this as «a firm directive» from which he anticipates «immediate and resolute translation into concrete and measurable actions.»

Aligning with the AfCFTA vision

This renewed impetus aligns seamlessly with Gabon’s steadfast commitments to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The AfCFTA’s overarching goal is to stimulate commercial activity among African economies and strengthen regional value chains.

In recent weeks, Gabonese authorities have intensified efforts to enhance the nation’s integration into the continental market. This includes reigniting discussions with the AfCFTA secretariat and actively promoting the local transformation of natural resources. For the Head of State, achieving economic sovereignty is intrinsically linked to strengthening African partnerships and progressively reducing reliance on external markets.

Expected outcomes and future direction

By specifically targeting food products, President Oligui Nguema is urging relevant government bodies to adapt their commercial policies and procurement mechanisms to increase the volume of trade with continental partners. This strategic orientation is expected to lead to reinforced regional trade agreements, streamlined African import processes, and deeper integration of Gabonese enterprises into continental value chains.

Elevating intra-African trade to a top governmental priority, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema is determined to move from rhetoric to tangible results. This ambition is central to his vision of a Gabon more deeply embedded within its African context, where economic collaboration serves as a powerful engine for growth, sovereignty, and shared prosperity across the continent.
