Gabon welcomes leaders from DRC and Guinea-Bissau for independence celebrations

The presidents of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Félix Tshisekedi, and Guinea-Bissau, General Horta N’Tam, will make official visits to Libreville in the coming days, coinciding with Gabon’s 66th independence anniversary. This announcement was made by Théophane Nzame Nze Biyoghe, spokesperson for the Gabonese presidency, through an official communiqué.

Key dates for the visits

The Congolese head of state is scheduled to arrive in Gabon’s capital on 15 August, taking part in the ceremonies marking the independence anniversary on 17 August, which commemorates the 1960 proclamation. Meanwhile, General Horta N’Tam will land in Libreville on 18 August, the day after the celebrations. Both visits aim to strengthen bilateral ties and cooperation between Gabon and these two nations.

Regional context behind the diplomatic visits

The timing of these visits is significant, given the political landscapes of the three countries. In Gabon, the engagements align with efforts to restore institutional stability following the 2023 coup that brought Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema to power, replacing Ali Bongo Ondimba. His subsequent election in April 2025 marked the return to constitutional order.

In the DRC, President Félix Tshisekedi, re-elected in December 2023 for a second term, continues to face challenges posed by an armed rebellion in the eastern regions. The M23 group maintains control over several areas despite multiple regional and international mediation attempts.

Guinea-Bissau is navigating a transitional phase following a military coup in November 2025. General Horta N’Tam, then army chief of staff, assumed the role of transitional president after President Umaro Sissoco Embalo was ousted three days following a disputed presidential election. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the coup, leading to the suspension of the electoral process and ongoing negotiations between the military junta and civilian authorities over the transition timeline.
