Fonseca sets sights on Sparta prague with ol ahead of must-win clash

As Lyon prepares for the crucial second leg against Sparta Prague in the Champions League third qualifying round, head coach Paulo Fonseca has a clear message: the Groupama Stadium must see early goals on Tuesday evening.

With Lyon trailing 1-2 from the first leg in Prague, Fonseca is banking on a return to the club’s signature 4-3-3 formation to turn the tie around. The Portuguese tactician confirmed the tactical switch, emphasizing the need for a more aggressive defensive structure and incisive attacking play. Moussa Niakhaté is set to return from suspension in central defense, while the front line will feature a trio of pace and power: Ernest Nuamah, Loïs Openda, and Malick Fofana.

«We’re going back to a flat four at the back to win,» Fonseca declared. «The issue in Prague wasn’t the five-man defense—it was our positioning and lack of aggression in both boxes. Our wingers are now sharper, and we’ve addressed the weaknesses that cost us dearly. The Sparta side is dangerous, but we’ve shown we can create chances. The priority? Score first. Once we do, expect a grueling, end-to-end battle.»
