Bamako and Algiers appear ready to leave behind months of diplomatic friction

Tensions escalated sharply in late March 2025 when a Malian drone was shot down near Tinzawatene, a border village straddling the Mali-Algeria frontier. Bamako swiftly brought charges at the International Court of Justice, accusing Algiers of interference and alleged ties to terrorist groups.

This incident marked the climax of months of strained relations. The rupture had begun a year earlier when Mali’s transitional authorities abandoned the 2015 Algiers Peace and Reconciliation Accord. Instead, they opted for a military approach to retake control of the northern regions, particularly Kidal.

Mali’s leadership later condemned Algeria for hosting former Kidal rebellion leaders and Imam Mahmoud Dicko, a key figure in the 2020 ouster of former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta—a move that deepened the rift with the current Malian junta.

roots of a deep bond

Boubacar Mahamane Maiga, a spokesperson for the civil society group Une Voix pour Tombouctou, welcomes the warming ties. He emphasizes the centuries-old fraternal and economic ties between the two nations.

“These are not just diplomatic relations; they are ancient bonds of brotherhood. Algeria has long been the economic lifeline for Tombouctou. Historically, the trans-Saharan trade routes that sustained Tombouctou all passed through Algerian territory. Even today, a staple spice like the Tawabel onion, sourced from the Touat region in Algeria, remains essential to our culture.”

security prospects

Political analyst Kaou Abdrahamane Diallo sees the restored dialogue as a turning point for regional stability.

“Mali cannot afford unsecured borders or persistent instability in its northern regions. We hope Algeria and all our partners will support this thaw. Restoring strong, peaceful ties with Algeria is vital—Algeria has been a steadfast ally to Mali, just as Mali has supported Algeria. Rekindling our historic friendship would be a major step forward.”

The easing of tensions owes much to Russian mediation efforts led by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Moscow has stressed the importance of maintaining unity among allies to preserve stability in the Sahel.
