Côte d’Ivoire: Abidjan displacements, key elections, and world cup aspirations dominate headlines

Abidjan’s recent events have captured the nation’s attention, with significant focus on ongoing urban demolitions, crucial electoral outcomes, and the excitement surrounding the 2026 World Cup. These pivotal developments shape the daily discourse across Côte d’Ivoire, reflecting both challenges and aspirations within the nation’s current affairs.

A major topic of discussion revolves around the extensive demolition and displacement operations currently underway in Abidjan. Public sentiment highlights strong solidarity for those affected, with figures like Euphrasie N’Guessan actively supporting the displaced communities. However, the government’s approach has drawn sharp criticism from some political circles. Pascal Affi N’Guessan, for instance, has characterized the situation as a clear “failure for Alassane Ouattara,” further asserting that the current administration “does not govern Ivorians” effectively. There’s a prevailing view that while the government attempts to alleviate distress, the opposition finds renewed vigor amidst these challenges.

Concerns are also being raised about the ruling party’s policies, with critics transforming the slogan “One Ivorian, one roof” into a lament of “no roof for the poor.” An in-depth investigation into the Koumassi Campement displacements questions whether these actions are part of a “vast conspiracy against the poor.” In response, the government has affirmed that emergency measures were decided during a crisis meeting led by Beugré Mambé, while also stressing that affected populations had been thoroughly forewarned about the impending operations.

Beyond urban development, the national electoral landscape has seen important results. The 12th congress of the National Union of Journalists of Côte d’Ivoire (UNJCI) concluded triumphantly with the election of Marie Laure N’Goran as president of its executive council. This leadership change has been widely reported with enthusiasm.

Another significant electoral outcome comes from the PPA-CI party, where Guéi Sylvie Epse Doukoula was elected National Secretary of the Women’s League. Following this electoral phase, the focus is now firmly on future actions, with the newly elected leader urging her comrades to remain vigilant and prepared. Meanwhile, within the RHDP, youth wings have announced ambitious plans for increased membership, comprehensive training programs, and enhanced political diplomacy, signaling robust future engagement.

In other notable news, the Vice-Prime Minister received an esteemed distinction, being recognized as the best Defense Minister of the decade within the ECOWAS region. Tragedy also struck in Brou-Akpaoussou (Andé), where the horrific death of a gold panner has prompted investigations into the exact circumstances of the incident.

The sporting world is abuzz with anticipation for the upcoming football World Cup in the United States. All eyes are on Côte d’Ivoire as the national team, the Elephants, prepares to kick off their campaign on Monday, June 15, against Équateur in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There is immense national hope, with many viewing this as a World Cup of great aspirations for the Elephants, who are fully immersed in their American dream.

Finally, Monday’s headlines also touched upon a certain unrest within the Chamber of Kings and Traditional Chiefs in Diabo and Languibonou, alongside crucial decisions from the Minister of National Education regarding student assignments for the 6th and 2nd grades.
