The Cameroonian government formally inaugurated the Pandemic Fund on Wednesday, a global mechanism established to help nations better anticipate major health threats. The launch event was led by the Minister of Public Health, Manaouda Malachie. Cameroon now receives $23.5 million in financial support to reinforce its epidemic prevention, detection, and response systems. The initiative adopts the ‘One Health’ approach, integrating human health, animal health, and ecosystem conservation to address the root causes of disease emergence.

Nationwide rollout targets 42 priority districts

The program will be implemented across all ten regions of Cameroon. A total of 42 health districts have been identified as priorities for enhanced support. Key investments include strengthening epidemiological surveillance, improving early warning systems, upgrading laboratory capacities, training healthcare professionals, organizing emergency responses, and mobilizing resources for rapid interventions. Speaking at the event, the Minister of Public Health emphasized that countries equipped with high-performance laboratories, skilled personnel, and prepared administrative systems are far better positioned to contain outbreaks effectively.

Implementation of the project is supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Bank, and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Launched in 2022 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Pandemic Fund finances initiatives aimed at bolstering countries’ capacities for prevention, preparedness, and emergency health response. The fund is now active in 128 countries, including Cameroon.
