At 93 years old, Paul Biya, who has led Cameroon since 1982 and holds the distinction of being the world’s longest-serving head of state, has been absent from Cameroonian soil for 48 days. He departed on June 7 for what an official communiqué described as a “short private stay in Europe,” accompanied by his wife, Chantal Biya. This prolonged hiatus has reignited a critical debate regarding the country’s leadership and the perceived inertia within its governance.

Mr. Biya’s health has frequently been the subject of widespread rumors, particularly given his regular sojourns in Geneva. These speculations are, at times, officially refuted by the government.

On June 18, in response to various press articles, Communication Minister René Emmanuel Sadi issued a statement explicitly denying that the Cameroonian leader was undergoing hospitalization at a clinic in Geneva.

For Cameroon’s opposition, this extended presidential absence reveals a “glaring institutional void,” as articulated by Mamadou Mota, Vice-President of the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC), in a social media post last Friday.
