The Cameroonian government has categorically denied any power vacuum following President Paul Biya’s prolonged absence from the country. Speaking exclusively to national media, government spokesperson René Emmanuel Sadi confirmed that the President remains alive and continues to fulfill his constitutional duties.
« The President is alive and well, » Sadi stated, addressing growing public concern about Biya’s extended stay abroad. While he acknowledged that Biya’s return date hasn’t been finalized, he assured citizens that his return is imminent.
Constitutional interpretations fuel opposition discourse
The government’s announcement follows weeks of speculation from opposition figures who questioned the legitimacy of Biya’s continued leadership. Sadi pushed back against these claims, arguing that constitutional provisions must be interpreted with « rigorous objectivity. »
« There is no power vacuum in Cameroon, » Sadi emphasized during the briefing. He specifically addressed rumors suggesting the Constitutional Council had declared a vacancy in the presidency, dismissing them as unfounded. « The Constitutional Council has not made any declaration regarding a power vacuum, » he confirmed.
