An 18-year-old Bosnian winger, Kerim Alajbegovic, has completed a move from Bayer Leverkusen to Juventus for a reported fee of at least €30 million, plus potential add-ons. The transfer marks Leverkusen’s second-highest departure fee and positions Alajbegovic as the most expensive teenager ever sold by a Bundesliga club.
Alajbegovic’s journey to Turin is unconventional. Despite never featuring in an official match for Leverkusen, the youngster has already been sold twice—first to Red Bull Salzburg for €2 million last summer, with Leverkusen retaining an €8 million buy-back option. The club activated the clause after Alajbegovic impressed in Austria, scoring 13 goals and providing four assists in 44 appearances across all competitions.
The teenager made his mark on the global stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, representing Bosnia and Herzegovina. He featured in four matches, netting a crucial goal, and drew attention from top European clubs. While Chelsea reportedly tabled a €40 million offer, Alajbegovic chose Juventus, reportedly swayed by an immediate guarantee of first-team football over a higher bid.
Why did Bayer Leverkusen let Alajbegovic go?
Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, explained the decision: “After his development here, Kerim has grown significantly during his time at Salzburg. However, our squad’s depth at his position is exceptional. Considering the overall transfer package, we agreed to his move to Italy.”
The club’s offensive lineup includes high-profile additions like Afonso Bastardo Moreira (€29.5 million from Olympique Lyonnais) and Eliesse Ben-Seghir (21), along with established talents Malik Tillman and Ibrahim Maza. Competing for minutes at Alajbegovic’s preferred wings and attacking midfield spots would have been challenging.
The Juventus gamble on youth
Juventus’ acquisition reflects a bold strategy to integrate young talent into their rebuilding phase. By securing Alajbegovic before his 19th birthday, the club secures his registration under UEFA’s homegrown player rules while investing in a player with proven potential.
