N’Djamena — President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno of Chad has vowed to intensify military operations against a resurgent Boko Haram faction operating along the Lake Tchad basin. In a statement released on social media, the president declared, “Our resolve to dismantle this threat remains unshaken, and we will pursue this fight until its complete elimination.”
The declaration followed a deadly assault on a Chadian military outpost in Barka Tolorom, located on the Chadian side of Lake Tchad. The attack, carried out by an offshoot of the extremist group, resulted in the deaths of 24 soldiers, underscoring the persistent security challenges facing the region.
The incident highlights the ongoing volatility in the Lake Tchad region, where armed factions linked to Boko Haram continue to pose a significant threat to regional stability. Despite previous counterterrorism efforts, the group’s ability to regroup and launch deadly strikes remains a critical concern for Chadian authorities and neighboring countries.
