Bénin security update: minister assesses field realities in Kandi and Parakou

Interior Minister Djibril Mama Cisse continues his security assessment tour in northern Bénin, engaging directly with law enforcement and addressing critical operational challenges.

Bénin security measures discussed during Kandi and Parakou tour

Interior Minister and Public Security Djibril Mama Cisse concluded a two-day assessment in Kandi and Parakou, engaging with frontline security personnel to refine national safety strategies. The visit included stops at the Multi-Skill Special Intervention Unit in Kandi, civil protection offices in Alibori and Borgou, the Mobile Intervention Company in Parakou, and the Departmental Directorate of Interior and Public Security in Parakou.

The minister emphasized the importance of listening, telling officers, “My presence here reflects my commitment to hearing your voices. I came to listen…” He encouraged open dialogue across all ranks and categories to identify operational hurdles that, once addressed, could enhance public safety outcomes. Common concerns raised spanned career progression, risk allowances, staffing shortages, and infrastructure gaps.

Challenges highlighted by law enforcement

  • Delayed promotions and career stagnation
  • Extended postings in high-risk zones
  • Inadequate risk allowances and motivational incentives
  • Shortages of specialized personnel and equipment
  • Disrupted communications due to damaged or missing GSM towers
  • Lack of fortified police stations in vulnerable areas

The delegation, including top police leadership, acknowledged these issues and outlined ongoing reforms. Discussions centered on career advancement policies and resource allocation to mitigate staffing deficits.

Acknowledging sacrifices and setting priorities

Minister Cisse praised security forces for their dedication, stating, “Thanks to your courage, Béninois citizens enjoy peace and stability. The nation stands firm because of your commitment.” He cautioned against empty promises, urging systemic solutions to ensure uninterrupted national progress.

His visit signals a proactive approach to public safety, with immediate action required to resolve operational challenges and sustain Bénin’s development trajectory.
