Benin has taken a decisive step in its public health modernization drive, greenlighting the construction of 14 new health centers nationwide alongside a complete overhaul of the Ouidah zone hospital’s maternity unit.
The approval, confirmed during a cabinet meeting on October 7, 2026, marks the start of an ambitious project to strengthen the country’s health infrastructure and bring essential medical services closer to underserved communities.
Rural and peri-urban areas prioritized for expanded healthcare access
The initiative targets key regions struggling with limited medical resources, including Kpakpamè, Savalou-Aguah, Kountori, Adjohoun, Tchi-Ahomadégbé, and Idigny. Once operational, these centers will significantly boost local healthcare capacity, ensuring higher standards of treatment and patient care in line with national health guidelines.
In parallel, the comprehensive renovation of Ouidah’s maternity unit aims to create a safer, more hygienic environment for expectant mothers and newborns, addressing critical gaps in maternal and child health services.
Government commits to strict project oversight and timely delivery
These developments form part of Benin’s broader Action Plan for Government (PAG) priority investments, designed to transform the nation’s public health landscape. To ensure adherence to deadlines and quality benchmarks, cabinet members have been tasked with close on-site monitoring throughout the construction process.
