Benin enhances medical emergency services with 600 high-tech oxygen concentrators

The Beninese healthcare landscape is undergoing a significant transformation. On Thursday, April 16, 2026, the Minister of Health, Professor Benjamin Hounkpatin, officially received a batch of 600 latest-generation oxygen concentrators, designed to bolster the operational capacity of 23 medical facilities across the nation.

Advanced technology to preserve life

Procured through UNICEF with the financial backing of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, this equipment represents a total investment exceeding 205,450 USD (approximately 116 million CFA francs). These “10LPM single flow” devices are engineered to provide a continuous and reliable supply of oxygen, a critical necessity for patients suffering from acute respiratory failure.

This massive distribution initiative specifically targets 23 hospitals and clinics located in the departments of Alibori, Littoral, Atacora, Borgou, Donga, Couffo, and Atlantique.

A strategic move against maternal and infant mortality

For Minister Benjamin Hounkpatin, this delivery is far more than a simple technical upgrade; it is a core component of a national strategy to lower maternal, neonatal, and child mortality rates.

“The availability of oxygen is of vital importance. This equipment serves as tangible evidence of our dedication to ensuring that every citizen, regardless of their location, has fair access to high-quality medical treatment,” he stated during the official handover ceremony.

Strengthening international health partnerships

The event took place in the presence of the Chinese Ambassador, H.E. Wei Zhang, and the UNICEF Resident Representative, Mr. Ousmane Niang. The Ambassador praised the robust diplomatic ties between China and Benin, confirming Beijing’s ongoing commitment to supporting the local health sector.

The UNICEF representative further noted that these resources, made possible by the generosity of individual donors in China, will substantially increase the resilience of Benin’s health system when facing life-threatening emergencies. This upgrade to the technical infrastructure aligns with the government’s continuous efforts to modernize national health services and improve public sector performance.
