Benin and Niger lift barriers to boost bilateral ties

On June 2, Cotonou and Niamey reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepen collaboration across key sectors during an official visit by Benin’s President, Romuald Wadagni, to Niger at the invitation of his counterpart, Abdourahamane Tiani.

A joint statement issued at the conclusion of the visit highlighted the Presidents’ conviction in the need to strengthen political, economic, scientific, and cultural cooperation. They agreed to intensify mutual exchanges, particularly through the regular convening of the Niger-Benin joint cooperation commission.

Both leaders pledged to address and remove all hurdles impeding bilateral cooperation, with a priority on reopening the Benin-Niger border. This long-closed border had previously strained human movement and local economic activities.

To turn this political resolve into actionable steps, the two heads of state established an expert committee tasked with identifying these obstacles and proposing viable solutions, with a mandate to submit a detailed report within fifteen days.

The discussions between Wadagni and Tiani, joined by their respective delegations, unfolded in an atmosphere of mutual respect and thorough examination of shared challenges. The leaders also addressed pressing regional and global issues shaping the current landscape.

They celebrated the enduring bonds of fraternity, friendship, and cooperation between Niger and Benin, reaffirming their joint dedication to elevating bilateral ties. Their goal: aligning cooperation with the aspirations of their citizens, who seek peace, stability, and progress.

Since assuming office on May 24, President Wadagni has prioritized restoring and strengthening ties with neighboring nations. He extended an official invitation to President Tiani to reciprocate the visit in Benin.
