Benin and Canada formalise enduring diplomatic partnership

Benin and Canada have inaugurated a permanent political and diplomatic consultation framework to institutionalise regular exchanges and systematically monitor mutual commitments. The announcement was made by Benin’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs via the X platform this Wednesday, August 5, 2026.

Historic ties reinforced through structured governance

The agreement was signed by Benin’s Deputy Foreign Minister Amori Brunet and Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, as outlined in a statement from Cotonou’s chancellery. The protocol is designed to « ensure the implementation of shared commitments, coordinate upcoming bilateral initiatives, and strengthen alignment on regional and international issues of mutual interest.»

This structured partnership builds on a decades-long collaboration that began in 1962, when the two nations first established formal diplomatic relations. Over the years, their cooperation has centred on economic development support, public health initiatives, and educational programmes. Annual bilateral trade consistently exceeds 40 million Canadian dollars.

Technical consultations pave the way for sustained cooperation

The formalisation of this agreement followed the presentation of credentials by Canada’s newly accredited ambassador, Evedabi, on Monday, August 3. The accreditation ceremony led to a series of technical working sessions involving key Beninese government officials.

Participants included Hugues Oscar Lokossou, Deputy Minister responsible for External Resource Mobilisation and Debt Management, and Shegun Bakari, Minister of Tourism, Foreign Trade, Industry, and Private Investment Promotion. This permanent mechanism underscores the renewed governance structure, cementing Benin and Canada’s long-term commitment to advancing their shared diplomatic and economic interests.
