Arsenal leads race for Bundesliga star as Bayern Munich steps back

The transfer market is heating up with a new twist: Arsenal has emerged as the frontrunner to sign Nathaniel Brown, the promising left-back from Eintracht Frankfurt, leaving Bayern Munich on the sidelines. The Gunners appear better positioned to meet the financial demands of the Hessian club, which has set a hefty price tag for the 22-year-old talent.

Eintracht Frankfurt sets sky-high demands for Brown

The race for Brown intensifies as the summer transfer window approaches, but Bayern Munich may have to abandon its pursuit. Despite long-standing interest in the young left-back, the Bavarian giants are facing a significant financial hurdle. According to reports, Eintracht Frankfurt is asking for approximately €65 million, a sum that Munich’s sporting director Max Eberl and the Allianz Arena hierarchy consider excessive given their need to tighten spending after several ambitious transfer campaigns.

The Frankfurt-based club, fully aware of Brown’s potential, remains firm on its valuation, refusing to entertain offers below their expectations. Their recent acquisition of the defender from Nuremberg in January 2024 for around €3 million has already yielded substantial book value growth, making this summer’s valuation a lucrative proposition.

Arsenal steps in as Bayern hesitates

While Bayern wavers, Arsenal has positioned itself as a serious contender for Brown’s signature. The London club, vying for a Premier League title, possesses the financial firepower to meet Frankfurt’s demands and is eager to bolster its left flank. Mikel Arteta’s side has identified Brown as a prime target, with the German defender fitting the profile of an offensive-minded, modern full-back capable of thriving in the Premier League’s intensity.

Brown’s versatility allows him to contribute both defensively and offensively, making him an ideal addition to a squad competing at the highest level. This season, he has featured in 42 matches across all competitions for Frankfurt, contributing four goals and six assists. Despite his individual performances, the club finished eighth in the Bundesliga, missing out on European qualification—a stark contrast to Arsenal’s ambitions under Arteta.

Bayern’s transfer dilemma: squad clearance needed

In Munich, the situation is complicated by an already crowded defensive roster. To pursue Brown seriously, Bayern must first reduce its ranks in that department. The club’s sporting leadership faces a delicate balancing act: either sanction the departure of key defensive players or risk overpaying for Brown without the necessary financial flexibility.

Specifically, the futures of Hiroki Ito and Alphonso Davies are central to discussions, with Eberl likely needing to offload one or both before any concrete offer for Brown can be approved. Without these departures, the €60-65 million demanded by Frankfurt remains out of reach for the German champions.

Nagelsmann praises Brown’s rapid rise

Brown’s reputation has soared since his integration into Julian Nagelsmann’s German national team setup. The 22-year-old defender is preparing for the 2026 World Cup and has impressed the coaching staff with his tactical intelligence, one-on-one prowess, and comfort in the half-spaces. His standout performance in a recent friendly against Finland has even put him in contention for a starting role on the left side of Germany’s defense.

Nagelsmann has openly lauded Brown’s attributes, stating, “He has a lot of potential, he’s very good in one-on-one situations, incredibly fast, and plays with great intelligence in the spaces between the lines.” The coach also highlighted the healthy competition between Brown and David Raum, noting, “They’re both excellent players with different styles, and either could start for the DFB-Team.”
