AES summit in Niamey: Burkina Faso’s top envoy meets Niger’s security chief

Niamey, July 27, 2026 – High-level consultations among Alliance of Sahel States (AES) officials continue against the backdrop of nationwide events marking the third anniversary of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) taking power. Today, the Nigerien Minister of State for Interior, Public Security and Territorial Administration, Major General Mohamed Toumba, hosted Bassolma Bazié, Chair of Burkina Faso’s AES National Commission, in a working meeting.

The Burkinabè official is in Niger to participate in the commemorative ceremonies, making a courtesy call to the Ministry of Interior where the discussions focused on pressing issues facing AES member states. The talks underscored shared priorities in security and regional stability.

Strengthening regional security cooperation within the AES

During the meeting, Bassolma Bazié commended Niger’s proactive security measures, highlighting the effectiveness of initiatives to protect civilians and bolster stability both domestically and across the confederation’s borders.

The discussions emphasized the AES’s commitment to unified action against shared threats, with security remaining the bloc’s top priority. Member states are aligning strategies to tackle regional challenges more effectively.

Deepening institutional ties among AES member states

This meeting follows a series of high-level gatherings in Niamey, reflecting the AES’s dedication to strengthening institutional bonds. The timing coincides with the third-anniversary celebrations of the CNSP’s rise to power in Niger.

By welcoming Burkina Faso’s AES Commission Chair, Major General Mohamed Toumba reaffirmed the critical role of inter-institutional dialogue in advancing the confederation’s goals of security, stability, and regional integration. The ongoing dialogue is seen as a cornerstone for achieving these shared objectives.
