March 26, 2026 – The World Bank has approved a significant 150 million dollar credit from the International Development Association (IDA) to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of essential health and education services across Mali. This crucial funding initiative aims to directly address the persistent climate, security, and economic challenges that have impacted the nation in recent years.

The Emergency Access to Essential Services in Mali Project is set to bolster the continuous operation of national and regional health facilities. This will be achieved through financing their operational costs, securing vital supplies of vaccines and essential medications, and providing free healthcare for women of reproductive age and children under five. Furthermore, the project will enhance the capabilities of health personnel to effectively manage growing health risks exacerbated by climate change. Within the education sector, the initiative will offer comprehensive support throughout the academic journey, including the provision of educational materials, targeted school grants for the most vulnerable students, and the crucial organization of national examinations.

This strategic operation plays a key role in advancing the World Bank Group’s employment agenda by diligently safeguarding human capital within the country.

“By preserving access to health and education services amid significant budgetary constraints, this project protects the pool of future workers and their productive capacity,” stated Clara de Sousa, World Bank Group Divisional Director for Mali. “Healthy, educated children and healthy mothers form the bedrock of a sustainable and productive workforce.”

The project anticipates reaching 2.3 million beneficiaries who will gain access to essential health services, with a specific focus on 1.4 million women and 391,395 children under the age of five. In education, 1.1 million students will receive crucial schooling support and access to national examinations under established standards, thereby fostering educational continuity and the development of human capital.

This intervention is designed to complement and strengthen the efforts of development partners. It is built upon extensive consultations and dedicated coordination mechanisms to guarantee efficient and harmonious implementation across Mali.
