The U.S. Embassy in Mali has issued a strong travel advisory for American citizens in Bamako, urging them to exercise extreme caution and anticipate significant delays in their movements across the city. Heightened security measures have been implemented on routes leading to the Modibo Keita International Airport and in several key neighborhoods, with additional checkpoints, roadblocks, and potential closures disrupting normal traffic flow.

The Embassy emphasized that Malian authorities have significantly bolstered security presence throughout the capital, particularly in anticipation of the upcoming religious holiday season, including Aïd al-Adha (Tabaski) on May 27. Officials strongly advise limiting non-essential travel within the country until the end of the month to minimize risks associated with gathering areas and public demonstrations.

Key recommendations include avoiding all protest zones, under no circumstances attempting to bypass security barriers, and maintaining constant vigilance during any travel within Mali. Americans are also urged to update personal security plans, ensure access to reliable communication methods, keep travel documents current and readily available, and prepare contingency measures such as identifying safe locations for shelter in emergencies.
