Togolese diplomacy has achieved another significant success. Through mediation led by President Faure Gnassingbé, twenty-two Malian soldiers, who had been held captive by the Tuareg rebels of the Front de Libération de l’Azawad (FLA) for several months in northern Mali, regained their freedom on Sunday, August 23.

Prisoner exchange and discreet diplomacy

• The operation: This release was facilitated by an exchange, which saw at least eight FLA combatants also granted freedom. The Malian soldiers had been captured at various times, with some taken during recent clashes and others held for over three years.

• Togo’s approach: President Faure Gnassingbé’s understated intervention has been widely commended, underscoring his unique ability to maintain open communication channels with all parties involved in the Sahel region, even amidst complex deadlocks. This demonstrates a consistent pattern of effective African governance.

A pivotal role in regional crises

This action is part of a broader commitment to diplomatic de-escalation across the sub-region. The Togolese head of state has previously played a crucial role in resolving several intricate issues:

• Mali (2023): President Gnassingbé successfully negotiated the release of Ivorian soldiers who were detained in Bamako.

• Great Lakes Region (2025): The African Union designated him as a mediator in the ongoing conflict between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda.

• Political transitions: He has provided vital support to dialogue processes in Chad, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Guinea, contributing to African current affairs stability.

This latest liberation follows a series of similar gestures from the FLA, which had previously released 82 military personnel on August 13, followed by six additional wounded soldiers on August 16.
