Togo welcomes three new ambassadors to strengthen diplomatic ties

The diplomatic landscape in Lomé has taken a significant turn as the Togolese government welcomed three newly accredited ambassadors, reinforcing the nation’s international partnerships. On a bright Wednesday morning, the President of Togo received the letters of credence from diplomats representing Canada, Pakistan, and Ghana, marking a new chapter in cooperation.

The ceremony, held at the presidential palace, underscored the growing importance of Togo as a key player in regional and global diplomacy. These accreditations reflect the country’s commitment to fostering stronger ties with both traditional allies and emerging economic partners.

Canada prioritizes trade, gender equality, and regional security

Myriam Montrat, Canada’s newly appointed ambassador to Togo, brought a wealth of experience in inclusive growth and global affairs. With a clear mandate to deepen bilateral relations, she outlined Ottawa’s priorities for the coming years.

  • Economic and social development: Strengthening trade ties, supporting education and healthcare systems, and advancing gender equality initiatives.
  • Regional security: Acknowledging Togo’s efforts in maintaining stability in West Africa, Montrat emphasized Canada’s readiness to assist in peacekeeping and security operations, stating, “We are prepared to support Togo in its mission to uphold peace and security in the region.”

Pakistan eyes agricultural and technological collaboration

Najeeb Durrani, Pakistan’s envoy to Togo, highlighted Islamabad’s eagerness to expand its partnership with Lomé. With a background in high-level diplomacy, including postings in Lebanon and Dubai, he aims to revitalize bilateral exchanges across multiple sectors.

“Our focus will be on enhancing political, economic, agricultural, and security cooperation,” Durrani stated. His appointment aligns with Togo’s strategy to engage more closely with Asian economic powerhouses, opening doors for future collaborations.

Ghana and Togo: A shared heritage driving mutual progress

George Kofi Nfojoh, Ghana’s new ambassador, emphasized the deep cultural and historical bonds between the two nations. “We are one people, sharing the same roots and values,” he remarked, stressing the need for joint efforts to uplift communities on both sides of the border.

A former member of parliament, Nfojoh pointed to the seamless movement of goods and people at the Ghana-Togo border as a testament to their close ties. His agenda includes boosting cross-border trade while addressing shared security challenges in the subregion.
