On Wednesday, June 24, Belngar Larmé Jacques, President of Chad’s National Human Rights Commission (CNDH), welcomed a high-level delegation from the African Union (AU). The primary goal of this significant meeting was to bolster the ongoing transitional justice process within Chad, aiming to solidify peace and foster greater social cohesion across the nation.
Led by Maria Jose Samba Ovono Obono, the Special Representative of the African Union Commission President in Chad and Head of Mission in N’Djamena, the delegation’s visit underscores a strategic partnership between the African Union and the International Center for Transitional Justice. This collaborative initiative is designed to advance sustainable resolutions to the various conflicts Chad has experienced, marking a crucial development in African current affairs.
Following the discussions, Maria Jose Samba Ovono Obono commended the National Human Rights Commission for its indispensable role. “We recognize the vital function the National Human Rights Commission performs,” she stated. “Its efforts are absolutely crucial, which explains our presence here today.”
The Special Representative further declared the African Union’s concrete commitment to the transitional justice framework. “The African Union is prepared to offer technical assistance,” she affirmed. “Our objective is to enhance capabilities, ensuring that transitional justice in Chad evolves into an effective instrument for achieving enduring peace, strengthening social cohesion, and contributing significantly to the nation-building process.”
Expressing her profound satisfaction with the “fruitful exchanges,” Maria Jose Samba Ovono Obono highlighted that the mission successfully identified the specific needs and challenges confronting the CNDH.
Concluding her remarks, she lauded the unwavering dedication of Chad’s highest authorities and national institutions towards fostering social cohesion and diligently seeking sustainable solutions for peace across the country, a testament to effective African governance.
