Tchad secures major urban development deals at global forum in Baku

Tchad gains momentum in sustainable urbanization at Baku’s global forum

The Minister of Land Use, Urban Planning and Housing concluded a high-level debrief on Thursday, presenting key outcomes from the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku, Azerbaijan. The closed-door session brought together cabinet members, municipal leaders, and development partners who contributed to the mission.

The Chadian delegation, led by the minister, included the Deputy Mayor of N’Djamena, senior officials from the National Housing and Urban Planning Agency (SOPROFIM), and representatives from UN-Habitat. Discussions centered on pressing challenges such as affordable housing shortages, sustainable city growth, and climate-resilient urban infrastructure.

According to the minister’s report, Chad’s active engagement elevated the country’s profile in continental urban policy debates and positioned it as a key voice in shaping Africa’s urban agenda. A dedicated pavilion showcased the nation’s flagship projects in housing, infrastructure, and community planning, drawing international interest.

One of the most significant outcomes is the confirmation of an official visit by the UN-Habitat Executive Director scheduled for September 9–11, 2026. During this visit, the director will assess urban realities on the ground and review priority projects submitted by Chadian authorities.

A major breakthrough came when Chad was named one of the ten countries eligible for the UN Green Climate Fund, supported by a joint initiative with Kenya. This eligibility unlocks access to substantial financing for climate-resilient urban projects, particularly flood prevention and drainage systems in vulnerable neighborhoods.

Parallel discussions with Kenyan and Moroccan counterparts laid the groundwork for new partnerships focused on social housing, informal settlement upgrading, and urban governance. Joint working groups and knowledge-exchange missions are now being planned to fast-track project implementation.

The minister emphasized that this mission marks a turning point for Chad’s urban future. By leveraging these new alliances and funding streams, the government aims to convert strategic opportunities into tangible improvements for residents across the country.

Through its active role at WUF13, Chad reaffirms its dedication to inclusive, sustainable, and climate-proof urban development—a priority aligned with the national vision outlined by the President of the Republic, His Excellency the Marshal.
