Dakar — Tensions rise as opposition leader Ousmane Sonko intensifies pressure on President Bassirou Diomaye Faye regarding the upcoming local elections schedule. During a campaign stop in Louga over the weekend, Sonko leveraged his party’s voter outreach efforts to directly confront the head of state on a critical governance issue.

With Pastef members turning out in large numbers, Sonko seized the moment to question recent dismissals of public officials—a prerogative Sonko acknowledged belongs to the president. Yet, in the same breath, he insisted that fixing an election date required no less urgency.

Sonko insists on timely local polls

« Issuing a decree to remove Fadilou Keïta, Waly Diouf Bodiang and others falls within the president’s authority—no one disputes that. But the same decree must set the date for local elections. They are, after all, both matters of executive action, » Sonko declared.

His remarks underscore a growing impatience within political circles over the lack of a definitive electoral calendar. For weeks, Sonko has opposed any postponement of the vote, reiterating at Louga the need for clarity on when Senegalese voters will cast their ballots.

Beyond procedural concerns, Sonko suggested a deeper motivation behind the delay: « The current momentum of our movement—its energy and mobilization—may well be what the authorities fear. » His implication? A scheduled vote could yield unexpected gains for Pastef, prompting hesitation in high places.
