Senegal’s constitutional reform blocked by court decision

The President of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, has publicly acknowledged the Constitutional Council’s ruling invalidating the constitutional reform law passed by lawmakers. As the leader of the Pastef party, Sonko accepted the verdict of what are locally referred to as the “Seven Wise Ones,” emphasizing that their decision is binding on all branches of government.

In a written statement, he noted, “Beyond any comments or differing interpretations of the reasoning behind the ruling, one thing remains clear: this decision is final and must be respected by everyone. So be it.”

Sonko framed the situation as proof that Senegal’s institutions function effectively when each operates within its designated authority. “This moment demonstrates that when institutions fulfill their roles as intended, no crisis can arise,” he stated.

He went on to reaffirm the National Assembly’s commitment to its legislative duties, vowing to continue its work without hesitation. “The National Assembly will proceed with its mandate undeterred. Laws will be debated, passed, or rejected in service of the Senegalese people, who deserve nothing less than dignity and progress,” he declared.
