Senegal reacts to Pastef leader’s criticisms of President Faye

Political tensions escalated in Senegal this week as opposition leader Ousmane Sonko launched a scathing critique of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s administration during the inauguration of the Pastef party’s new headquarters in Touba.
Sonko’s remarks, described by the ruling coalition as ‘scandalous’ and ‘unworthy of his role as National Assembly President,’ focused on what he termed the president’s misplaced priorities. He questioned the government’s commitment to addressing Senegal’s mounting public debt and criticized the lack of a clear agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), stating, “Senegalese citizens must understand that their well-being is not the president’s primary concern.”
The president’s team swiftly fired back, dismissing Sonko’s allegations as “personal attacks designed to undermine national progress.” In an official statement, the Diomaye Faye coalition emphasized the administration’s dedication to improving living conditions for all Senegalese, accusing Sonko of prioritizing confrontation over constructive dialogue.
The exchange underscores the deepening divide between Senegal’s political factions as the country grapples with economic challenges and governance reforms.
