Senegal politics: former pastef leader pivots to president’s coalition

The political landscape in Podor has witnessed a significant shift following the defection of a prominent local leader from the Pastef party. Ibrahima Diam Sow, who previously served as Pastef’s coordinator in Méri and headed the Patriotic Movements Union (MPI), has publicly distanced himself from the movement led by Ousmane Sonko.

From party veteran to independent voice

Once a key figure in Pastef’s northern Senegal operations, Diam Sow rose to prominence as the party’s communication chief in the Podor region. His departure comes after years of deepening dissatisfaction with the party’s evolving direction. He highlights what he describes as « glaring contradictions » within the movement’s ranks and criticizes the emergence of what he calls « a dictatorship of uniform thought ». These fundamental disagreements have led him to conclude that he can no longer align with Pastef’s current political vision.

A new political allegiance

Diam Sow’s break with Pastef coincides with his public endorsement of the Diomaye-Président coalition. He now positions himself as a staunch supporter of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s administration, emphasizing his commitment to national interests above party loyalty. « We must place the nation before the party, » he states, underscoring the moral imperative guiding his decision.

Legacy in Senegal’s northern politics

The former party coordinator leaves behind a legacy of grassroots mobilization in northern Senegal. His contributions include organizing Pastef’s inaugural visit to the region in 2017 and collaborating closely with local political figures like Ibrahima Sy during multiple election campaigns. His departure marks the end of an era for the party’s northern stronghold while opening a new chapter in his own political journey.
