Senegal political tensions diomaye faye exclusion Pastef party

Senegal’s political climate heats up as Pastef weighs Diomaye Faye’s future

Tensions within Senegal’s ruling Pastef party have reached a critical point following allegations that President Diomaye Faye has strayed from the ideals that propelled him to power. As calls for his expulsion intensify, party leader Ousmane Sonko has struck a cautious tone, emphasizing that such decisions will follow the party’s established procedures without haste.

Speaking on 15 June, Sonko addressed the growing internal debate, stating that the party’s structures will evaluate the situation when the time is right. “This needs to be assessed at the appropriate moment,” he noted, adding that Pastef operates with clear internal rules that must be followed meticulously.”

When pressed on whether Faye’s actions constituted a “betrayal” of the party’s vision, Sonko refrained from using the term, opting instead for a more politically grounded perspective. “Betrayal is a moral and emotional concept,” he explained. “I prefer to focus on the political level. While some of the commitments we made to the Senegalese people are not being honored—and there seems to be no intention to do so—my stance remains rooted in reason rather than emotion.”

Sonko’s remarks underscore the delicate balance Pastef must strike as it navigates internal divisions while maintaining its public credibility. The party’s leadership has yet to signal any immediate action, signaling a deliberate approach to resolving the crisis.
