Ousmane Sonko’s funding demands spark political controversy
The Senegalese political landscape faces new tensions as revelations emerge about former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko’s management of official funds. Minister Abdourahmane Diouf has publicly questioned the origins and allocation of a 1.77 billion CFA franc political fund during Sonko’s tenure.
The ongoing verbal sparring between the Pastef party and the Kiiraay movement shows no signs of abating. Without an impartial referee to call a halt to the exchanges, both sides continue to unveil what they claim to know about each other’s operations.
The latest salvo comes from Abdourahmane Diouf, who during an RS1 television appearance hosted by Migui Marième Ndiaye, addressed the controversial issue of Sonko’s political funds. The Minister of Petroleum and Energy revealed that Sonko had allegedly requested additional funding after depleting the allocated 1.77 billion CFA francs.
Crucially, Diouf did not clarify whether this supplementary request was approved by relevant authorities. The revelation raises serious questions about the transparency of these political funds, with only two individuals traditionally privy to such sensitive information: the President of the Republic and the Minister of Finance.
The minister’s statements have added fresh fuel to the already heated political debate in Senegal, with citizens and analysts alike demanding clearer explanations about fund management practices.
