Senegal political funds dispute between Sonko and Diomaye escalates

Senegal’s Premier Ousmane Sonko challenges President Diomaye on political funds oversight

In a rare public display of internal executive disagreement, Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has openly challenged President Bassirou Diomaye Faye over the control of political funds—a reform that was once a cornerstone of their joint presidential campaign promises.

The Prime Minister, speaking before lawmakers, disclosed that the parliamentary initiative to regulate political financing had been spearheaded by Guy Marius Sagna, a lawmaker from their party. However, Sonko expressed reservations about the legislative approach, arguing that such a critical financial reform should originate from the executive branch rather than the National Assembly. He emphasized that he had personally raised these concerns with the President, warning that the government could not afford to remain passive on such a pivotal issue.

According to Sonko, President Diomaye Faye responded cautiously, requesting additional time to assess the feasibility of the proposed reform without committing to a concrete timeline. The Prime Minister’s patience appears to be wearing thin, as he issued a clear ultimatum: if the President continues to delay a decision, Sonko will not hesitate to push the proposal forward for approval in the Council of Ministers.

This public disagreement over political funds is more than just a procedural dispute—it underscores the growing tensions in governance between Senegal’s two top leaders. The outcome of this standoff could set a significant precedent for how executive power is exercised and how reforms are implemented in the country.

The Prime Minister’s firm stance suggests a potential shift in the balance of power within the ruling party, Pastef, as internal divisions over policy direction and governance styles become increasingly apparent.
