The High Authority for Party Regulation (HARP) of PASTEF-Les Patriotes officially initiated the process for electing the party president on May 14, 2026. According to decision n°001/2026/HARP, published by the body, the submission period for candidacies commenced on May 15 and will conclude at noon on May 20, 2026.

This decision notably avoids reserving any exclusivity for the incumbent president, Ousmane Sonko. Instead, it formally opens the competition to all factions within the party, allowing the current Prime Minister the opportunity to seek a renewed mandate, but without guaranteeing him automatic access to the party’s helm.

The establishment of this formal competitive process directly reflects public statements made by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who previously criticized the party for being excessively «personified». By implementing an open and regulated procedure, HARP directly addresses this critique, simultaneously raising crucial questions about PASTEF’s leadership during a pivotal period for the organization.

When recently questioned about the party’s prospective candidate for the 2029 presidential election, Diomaye Faye indicated that any designation would be contingent upon the conclusions of the upcoming congress, signaling that the candidate selection remained an open internal matter. This current election for party leadership serves as a prerequisite step to that broader debate.

five days to submit a candidacy

HARP has set a demanding timeline: candidates have only five working days to compile and submit their application files. These submissions must follow a standardized declaration form, the template for which is appended to the decision. HARP’s deliberation on this matter took place during a special session held on May 14, 2026.

The outcome of this internal ballot will determine who officially represents PASTEF in the lead-up to the next congress, where the critical question of the 2029 presidential candidacy is expected to be resolved.
