Senegal’s governance shift: Sonko’s warning to incoming Prime Minister Al Aminou Lo

The official handover ceremony at Senegal’s Prime Ministry office marked more than a routine transition—it signaled a deliberate continuity in governance amid complex challenges. Outgoing Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and his successor, Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô, stood together in a moment of mutual respect and institutional alignment.
The Friday ceremony, held in the presence of key government officials, became a platform where both leaders acknowledged their shared history in steering national transformation. Al Aminou Lô, now at the helm of Senegal’s executive branch, took the opportunity to reflect on the journey that brought him to the Prime Ministry.
From collaboration to leadership: the roots of a new mandate
In a candid account, the incoming Prime Minister traced his professional ties with Sonko back to early 2024. « I was called upon by him in April that year, » he recounted. « He didn’t know me personally, yet he placed his trust in my abilities. » That initial gesture laid the foundation for a deeper involvement in national affairs.
Following that invitation, Al Aminou Lô was integrated into executive processes tied to the National Transformation Agenda. « The president, recognizing the need for coordination, called upon me to serve alongside him in implementing this vision, » he explained. « The results we achieved together have been widely recognized. »
A bridge between institutions
The departing and incoming Prime Ministers shared a commitment to maintaining seamless cooperation between the Prime Ministry and the Presidency. Sonko had personally urged Al Aminou Lô to act as a vital link between the two branches. « He asked me to remain the bridge between the Prime Ministry and the Republic’s presidency, ensuring the continuity of the National Transformation Agenda, » the new leader noted.
This directive was not just symbolic. Al Aminou Lô emphasized the practical nature of their collaboration, sharing that he maintained regular contact with Sonko throughout the transition period. « Whenever I needed to report progress, seek guidance, or simply exchange views, he welcomed me with openness and goodwill, » he said.
Words of caution and continuity
The handover wasn’t just about celebrating past achievements—it was also a moment of sober reflection. Sonko, in a private conversation, offered a stark reminder of the road ahead. « He told me, ‘This will be very, very difficult, » Al Aminou Lô recalled, framing the challenges as both institutional and systemic.
Despite the weight of expectations, the incoming Prime Minister expressed confidence in leveraging Sonko’s experience. « I will continue to seek his wise counsel, » he affirmed. « Any time I face uncertainty or need clarity, I will turn to him for guidance. »
As the ceremony concluded, the symbolic transfer of responsibility was underscored by a shared sense of purpose. Both leaders acknowledged the human dimension of governance—the trust, generosity, and mutual support that underpin effective leadership in Senegal.
