Senate President Sounds Alarm on Cameroon’s Gender Violence Crisis

Senate President and Lamido of Rey Bouba, Aboubakary Abdoulaye, has issued a stern call for immediate government action to address the disturbing rise in sexual violence against children and femicide cases across Cameroon.

Speaking during the opening session of the Senate’s second ordinary sitting in Yaoundé, witnessed by Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute, National Assembly President, and multiple government officials, Abdoulaye condemned the brutal attacks that violate fundamental human rights and destroy lives.

Government urged to take decisive action

«The sexual abuse of women and children, alongside femicide, must be confronted with unwavering resolve,» Abdoulaye declared, emphasizing the need for stronger prevention and prosecution mechanisms.

The senator’s intervention follows national outrage over the alleged rape of a three-year-old girl in Yaoundé. This horrific incident has sparked widespread protests and reignited vital discussions about child protection and gender-based violence prevention measures.

Public outcry demands systemic change

Cameroonians have taken to the streets in growing numbers, demanding immediate government intervention to safeguard vulnerable populations. The case has highlighted critical gaps in existing protection frameworks while underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive legal reforms and enforcement.

The Senate President’s remarks reflect mounting public pressure for Cameroon to implement robust measures that ensure justice for victims and create safer communities for all citizens.
