Manchester United’s co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has taken a firm stance to prevent Marcus Rashford from joining any of England’s top-flight rivals, despite the striker’s clear desire to leave Old Trafford this summer. The billionaire’s intervention underscores the club’s determination to avoid a scenario where one of its homegrown talents thrives at a direct competitor.

Rashford, now 28, returned to the club’s training base in Carrington following a season-long loan at Barcelona, where he rediscovered form with 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances. Yet his future at Manchester United remains uncertain, with Ratcliffe unwilling to facilitate a move to any Premier League side perceived as a direct rival.

Ratcliffe’s red lines on domestic transfers

According to insiders, Ratcliffe has explicitly vetoed potential transfers of Rashford to clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Tottenham Hotspur. The rationale extends beyond permanent deals, as the co-owner has also blocked loan proposals from other top-flight teams. Club executives fear Rashford’s presence could prove decisive in helping a rival secure a Champions League spot—a prospect described as deeply unsettling.

Barcelona’s decision and Rashford’s setback

Rashford’s current contract expires in 2028, leaving him with the option to remain at United for two more years before leaving on a free transfer—a scenario that would represent a significant financial loss for the club.
