PSG champions: chaotic celebrations in Paris lead to 780 arrests
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported 416 arrests—283 in the Paris metropolitan area alone—during a late-night press briefing. “These disturbances are completely unacceptable,” he stated firmly.
France’s Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced Sunday, May 31, that a total of 780 individuals were detained across France following chaotic celebrations after Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League victory. This figure represents a 32% increase compared to last year’s celebrations. Of these arrests, 457 led to police custody. In 2025, after PSG’s first Champions League win, 592 people were arrested, including 491 in Paris. Nuñez also revealed that 57 police and gendarmerie officers were injured during the unrest.
A fatal motorcycle accident occurred on the Paris ring road during the early hours of Sunday, coinciding with the PSG victory celebrations. According to witnesses, the rider, born in 2002, collided with concrete blocks on an exit ramp near Porte Maillot. Additionally, a stabbing victim in the capital remains in critical condition.
Two pedestrians struck by a fleeing driver
“There were festive gatherings that unfortunately turned violent, exactly as we had anticipated,” Nuñez explained during a press briefing around 1:30 AM Sunday. He added that a driver lost control of his vehicle Saturday night, crashing into a terrace before fleeing. While the most seriously injured pedestrian is not in immediate danger, the situation underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement during major sporting events.
Massive security deployment for Champions League final
The Paris prefecture had prepared meticulously for the Champions League final security, alongside other simultaneous capital events including a rugby match, the ongoing Roland-Garros tennis tournament, and multiple concerts featuring artists like Aya Nakamura at the Stade de France and Damso at Paris La Défense Arena. With 22,000 police and gendarmerie officers mobilized—8,000 in Paris and its metropolitan area—the security operation was unprecedented in scale.
