Niamey, 8 June 2026 – The Société nigérienne d’électricité (NIGELEC) announced on Monday that power supply disruptions in Dosso, Niamey and Tillabéri are due to a technical fault on the Zone Fleuve electrical system.
The company detected the failure at around 1:50 a.m. and immediately dispatched technical teams to gradually restore service as quickly as possible.

While awaiting full restoration, NIGELEC activated local generation units to ease the impact on customers. The utility apologised for the inconvenience and assured that repair operations are ongoing.
Crisis communication marked by caution
Facing an urgent situation, NIGELEC’s management is trying to reassure customers caught off guard while remaining cautious. Although the firm confirmed that the anomaly occurred on the critical Zone Fleuve network, it has not disclosed the exact nature or technical cause of this major failure.
Behind the scenes, engineers are racing against time to diagnose the problem. Aware of the disruption to daily life and the economy, the company is urging patience while technical teams secure and fully restart the main system.
Strategic geographical axis paralysed
The incident’s impact is significant because it strikes the country’s economic and administrative heart, including the capital Niamey and the key regions of Dosso and Tillabéri. To prevent a complete blackout and keep vital infrastructure such as hospitals, businesses and government offices running, NIGELEC urgently activated its local production units.
This switch to backup generators, though insufficient to meet normal demand, serves as a temporary shield to mitigate major disruptions until the national grid is reconnected.
